FREE AGENCY BLOWOUT PART 2: Wait, what? Edition.

So Free Agency is starting to wind down and most of the high profile players have chosen a destination for their talents. Some of these moves, while not necessarily bad, have been pretty strange. Some of the teams that facilitated these interesting at best moves were hamstrung by previous decisions, have fun with Monte Mavs fans, and others were interesting splurge moves. Either way, it has been super fun to think about the coming season and the hilarity that will be the Bucks season.

  • So I've thought about it a lot and I've come to the conclusion that I don't like the Pistons signing of Josh Smith. That isn't a slight on Smith, it's just that I don't like his fit in Detroit. With Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond pegged as the front court of the future for Detroit I have to imagine that the Pistons plan on starting Smith at the 3. A front court of Smith, Monroe, and Drummond would be monstrous defensively and on the boards. On offense however, this arrangement gets a little trickier, largely because of spacing. Today's NBA is all about floor space and that floor space is created by shooters. Floor space becomes that much more important when trying to establish a post presence. Monroe and to a lesser extent Drummond will need that space to operate in the post. Smith however isn't the floor spacer you would need in the front-court with Monroe and Drummond. The drafting of Caldewell-Pope may provide the shooting needed for this arrangment to work, but that is a lot of pressure for a rookie to face. I see a lot of long 2s in Smith's future as a Piston. With that being said, I hope we get to see many Smith-Drummond PnR, that would be all of the fun.
  • So Paul Pierce wont be retireing as a Celtic. Who saw that one coming? Everyone should be raising their hand right now. Danny Ainge made the right decision to move Kevin Garnett, Jason Terry, and Paul Pierce. Still, its going to be quite the strange sight to see Pierce in a Nets jersey. I like the moves for both teams too. I will say that Ainge got lucky that the owner of the Nets doesn't mind paying a luxury tax that would rival a nation's net worth. But with Prokorav in "win yesterday" mode this move makes the most sense. The Nets may be trotting out a lineup of Williams-Johnson-Pierce-Lopez-KG, with a former 6th man of the year off the bench. Throw in the fact that Jason Kidd will be coaching and this team has the potential for more drama than the new season of Bad Girls Club. Meanwhile, the Celtics got bad quick enough for the stacked 2014 draft, got young prospects and are in a good post-"Big Three" phase. I particularly am excited for Marshon Brooks. He was never a fit for a win-now team and now that he is on a rebuilding team he can get the minutes and development he needs. We should figure out exactly where Brooks fits into the league this coming season.
  • If I could give an award for the biggest "Wait, what?" Moves of the off-season it would unquestionably go to the Bucks. From the signing of Zaza to the Mbah a Moute trade, the Bucks have created a disaster of a roster. I can only justify these moves at the worst attempt at tanking in the league. I'm not even sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. With Brandon Jennings firmly in "Get Mine" mode, this season should be pretty bad for the Bucks. Yay?
  • Picking a loser of the 2013 off season has been pretty easy. After missing out on Deron Williams and Dwight Howard in consecutive off-seasons Dirk in the Mavs will be settling for the Pu Pu platter of Devin Harris and Monta "Have it All" Ellis. These moves basically guarntee that the Mavs MIGHT be fighting for the 8th seed in the West. Not the greatest spot for the 2011 champions, but there is always the 2014 off-season right?
